St. Andrews Skydive

Jacqui Strachan completed her Tandem Skydive on 31st March – see her story below! Well done, Jacqui, and many thanks for your support of The Moira Fund.

“Well it isn’t everyday that you jump from a plane at 10,000 feet and fall to the earth at a speed of 120 miles per hour…….I have to say the free fall was pretty awesome! The staff at Skydive St Andrews were extremely experienced and very professional, they had me at ease in no time…….after a 45 minute training session I was good to go! Weather conditions were perfect for the 10,000 ft climb and the Skydive……I was certainly feeling a bit nervous as the door was opened and I eased my way forward for the jump…….a lesson certainly learned for the next time……don’t ever look down!! Lol. The jump was absolutely amazing and I enjoyed every minute……it certainly was an experience of a lifetime, one that will stay with me for a very long time! Sadly I only had the opportunity to meet Moira once…..it was an honour to do this for such a great cause and in her memory…….it was a perfect day!

Masons in Stafford

Bea and Hu Jones were invited to the Staffordshire Provincial Grand Stewards’ Lodge in Stafford on 23 January to talk about the history and work of The Moira Fund.

They were given an extremely warm, attentive reception and were most appreciative of the support and generosity shown to them on the night – the proceeds of the evening’s raffle and cheques from two of the Lodges represented – and the advice given to them about help for the future. It was a quite a night!

The Moira Fund joins Victims’ Alliance

Thirty-one charities and organisations from across the UK have joined forces to launch the new Victims’ Services Alliance, a collaboration which should mean a pooling of expertise and a much stronger voice to promote the interests of bereaved victims. New Year Raffle

The Survivors Session at the Crown in Stafford on January 1st certainly got the New Year off to a good start for The Moira Fund. Their “mad-crap” raffle raised £100 for our funds and we are very grateful indeed to Steve Gullick and all those followers of ”Folky Things”.

Jedburgh 10k

David, Barrie and John successfully completed the Jedburgh 10k. They did it in just over one hour – “not bad for a bunch of oldies” (not our words). We are very grateful for the efforts of this Britvic team – a big thank you to them and all their sponsors.

The Moira Fund Update, October 2011

Since our last update in May, by email and at the Open Evening at Weston Village Hall, we have paid for 20 victims from all parts of the country to attend a specialist-run weekend retreat near Crewe and also for the setting up of three new support groups, one based in London and two in Scotland. We continue, of course, to help those families referred to us by Police, Homicide Caseworkers or Victim Support Officers. We have now helped more than 160 families in a variety of ways, distressed families from Inverness to Bournemouth. Since our visits earlier in the year to Scotland Yard, we have been invited to address Homicide Caseworkers and Counsellors in Rugby, Family Liaison Co-ordinators in Aberdeen and The Rotary Club of Glasgow – knowledge of our work is spreading.

The wonderful amount of money raised at the Stafford and the Glasgow Moira Fund Autumn Balls means we can continue to help others traumatically bereaved by the murder of a loved one.

We are grateful for the support of all those who make this possible.

The Glasgow University Union was the venue for this year’s Ball which went with a real swing, in the company of our Scottish patrons Elaine C Smith and Dame Elish Angiolini. The inclement weather did nothing to dampen spirits and a great time was had by all. Prizes donated for the auctions and prize draw exceeded all expectations, our guests were most generous in their support and we are thrilled with the magnificent amount of money raised. We would like to express our deep appreciation for the kindness and goodwill of all concerned.

The Moira Fund Late Summer Ball 2011

The Moira Fund Late Summer Ball 2011, held at Staffordshire County Showground on 24 September, was yet again a great success. The refurbished Ingestre Suite provided a beautiful setting for a most enjoyable evening – with excellent food, music and fund-raising activities. The amount of money raised is due to the wonderful generosity of all guests and sponsors. Thank you so much to everyone who supported the event and contributed to its third successful year.

Zurich Ironman

Paul Hill has successfully completed the amazing, gruelling Zurich Ironman event for The Moira Fund.

In spite of sustaining a knee injury early in his training, Paul swam 2.4 miles, cycled 112 miles and then ran a 26 mile marathon, in 12.42 hours. How exhausting is that? How superb is that? We are just amazed, Paul, and hugely grateful. We thank you for your wonderful efforts and for all the sponsorship you raised. Thank you.
