The Moira Fund joins Victims’ Alliance

Thirty-one charities and organisations from across the UK have joined forces to launch the new Victims’ Services Alliance, a collaboration which should mean a pooling of expertise and a much stronger voice to promote the interests of bereaved victims. New Year Raffle

The Survivors Session at the Crown in Stafford on January 1st certainly got the New Year off to a good start for The Moira Fund. Their “mad-crap” raffle raised £100 for our funds and we are very grateful indeed to Steve Gullick and all those followers of ”Folky Things”.

Jedburgh 10k

David, Barrie and John successfully completed the Jedburgh 10k. They did it in just over one hour – “not bad for a bunch of oldies” (not our words). We are very grateful for the efforts of this Britvic team – a big thank you to them and all their sponsors.

The Moira Fund Update, October 2011

Since our last update in May, by email and at the Open Evening at Weston Village Hall, we have paid for 20 victims from all parts of the country to attend a specialist-run weekend retreat near Crewe and also for the setting up of three new support groups, one based in London and two in Scotland. We continue, of course, to help those families referred to us by Police, Homicide Caseworkers or Victim Support Officers. We have now helped more than 160 families in a variety of ways, distressed families from Inverness to Bournemouth. Since our visits earlier in the year to Scotland Yard, we have been invited to address Homicide Caseworkers and Counsellors in Rugby, Family Liaison Co-ordinators in Aberdeen and The Rotary Club of Glasgow – knowledge of our work is spreading.

The wonderful amount of money raised at the Stafford and the Glasgow Moira Fund Autumn Balls means we can continue to help others traumatically bereaved by the murder of a loved one.

We are grateful for the support of all those who make this possible.

The Moira Fund Autumn Ball 2011

The Glasgow University Union was the venue for this year’s Ball which went with a real swing, in the company of our Scottish patrons Elaine C Smith and Dame Elish Angiolini. The inclement weather did nothing to dampen spirits and a great time was had by all. Prizes donated for the auctions and prize draw exceeded all expectations, our guests were most generous in their support and we are thrilled with the magnificent amount of money raised. We would like to express our deep appreciation for the kindness and goodwill of all concerned.

The Moira Fund Late Summer Ball 2011, held at Staffordshire County Showground on 24 September, was yet again a great success. The refurbished Ingestre Suite provided a beautiful setting for a most enjoyable evening – with excellent food, music and fund-raising activities. The amount of money raised is due to the wonderful generosity of all guests and sponsors. Thank you so much to everyone who supported the event and contributed to its third successful year.

Zurich Ironman

Paul Hill has successfully completed the amazing, gruelling Zurich Ironman event for The Moira Fund.

In spite of sustaining a knee injury early in his training, Paul swam 2.4 miles, cycled 112 miles and then ran a 26 mile marathon, in 12.42 hours. How exhausting is that? How superb is that? We are just amazed, Paul, and hugely grateful. We thank you for your wonderful efforts and for all the sponsorship you raised. Thank you.

The Moira Fund Glasgow Autumn Ball 2011

This year’s Glasgow Autumn Ball is to be held on 1 October at Glasgow University Union and will be hosted by our patron, Elaine C Smith.

Please join us for what promises to be a thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable evening. Guests will be treated to a “bubbly” reception at 7pm. We will all enjoy a delicious three course meal and there will be fun-raising and fund-raising activities including our fantastic Thomson Holiday Prize Draw and Grand Auction before we dance the night away to a live band.

Dame Elish!!

The Right Honourable Elish Angiolini QC, our newest Patron, who, as Lord Advocate of Scotland led the prosecution at the trial of Moira’s killer, has been awarded a DBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. We are absolutely delighted for Dame Elish and send her our warmest congratulations on this much-deserved honour.

Last week Elish, standing down from her role as Lord Advocate, said that she was “truly touched” by the courage of Moira’s family and she wanted to contribute and support The Moira Fund. We are so pleased that Elish has joined Patrons Elaine C Smith and Angela Rippon OBE, and that we now have the wonderful support of three most genuine, caring and talented individuals.

Cycling The Outer Hebrides

Grant Jones cycled the length of the Outer Hebrides, approx. 100 miles, for The Moira Fund. He cycled south across Lewis and Harris, then after a ferry trip he cycled through North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist. Extra to his itinerary, Grant then sailed to Barra and cycled around that island before returning to the mainland. He expected to be pummelled by wind and rain but the weather was kind.
